George Frederick Handel (1685–1759)
Handel achieved fame as a composer while still a child. By the early 1700s, he was one of the most successful composers on earth. However, by the 1730s, Handel’s fame had faded and he faced financial ruin. On 22 August 1741, Handel started composing music for a passage from the book of Isaiah and twenty-three days later, he finished “Messiah.” “Messiah” was performed for the first time, to critical acclaim and financial success, in London on 23 March 1743 .
