vanities; all is vanity.

14 I have seen all the works that are done under the
sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
Ecclesiastes 2:1
1 I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with
mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.
Ecclesiastes 2:15-23
15 Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the
fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this
also is vanity.
16 For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is
in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.
17 Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for
all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
18 Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the
man that shall be after me.
19 And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my
labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also
vanity.
20 Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the
sun.
21 For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that
hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great
evil.
22 For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured
under the sun?
23 For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the
night. This is also vanity.

work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of
spirit.
5 The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.
6 Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of
spirit.
7 Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.
8 There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is
there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For
whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore
travail.

honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not
power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
3 If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many,
and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely
birth is better than he.
4 For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with
darkness.

9 Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering
of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

with him that is mightier than he.

thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be
wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is
vanity.

evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity.

vanity.

haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.
12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every
one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:
13 And upon all the cedars of Lebanon, that are high and lifted up, and upon all the oaks of
Bashan,
14 And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up,
15 And upon every high tower, and upon every fenced wall,
16 And upon all the ships of Tarshish, and upon all pleasant pictures.
17 And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and
the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

16 Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion
are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go,
and making a tinkling with their feet:
17 Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and
the LORD will discover their secret parts.
Isaiah 5:15
15 And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man
shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled:
Isaiah 5:18
18 Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and
sin as it were with a cart rope:
Isaiah 9:9-10
9 And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the
inhabitant of Samaria, that say in the pride and stoutness of heart,
10 The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with hewn stones: the sycomores are cut down, but
we will change them into cedars.
Isaiah 10:5-16
5 O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their
hand is mine indignation.
6 I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give
him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the
streets.
7 Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy and
cut off nations not a few.
8 For he saith, Are not my princes altogether kings?
9 Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus?
10 As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel them of
Jerusalem and of Samaria;
11 Shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?
12 Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount
Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the
glory of his high looks.
13 For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and
I have removed the bounds of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the
inhabitants like a valiant man:
14 And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathereth eggs that are
left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth,
or peeped.
15 Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? or shall the saw magnify itself
against him that shaketh it? as if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as
if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood.
16 Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his
glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.

stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man
that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

all the honourable of the earth.

7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
